AFTER SCHOOL DRAMA ENSEMBLE

Overview

I was a dedicated member of the Captivate Secondary After School Ensemble from 2021 to 2025, attending weekly sessions that brought together students from across multiple schools. The ensemble provided a collaborative environment where I developed acting, improvisation, and play-building skills, while contributing to various performances and creative projects throughout the year.

Experience and Development

Throughout my time in the ensemble, I participated in weekly rehearsals that emphasised improvisation, script analysis, voice, movement, and character work. These sessions allowed me to experiment with different performance styles, develop my stage presence, and deepen my understanding of ensemble collaboration. I also worked closely with peers to create original short plays, scene work, and performance pieces, which strengthened my ability to contribute creatively to group projects and adapt to dynamic performance environments.

In addition to acting, I integrated my musical skills by performing on guitar and trumpet in ensemble productions, supporting music-driven projects and enhancing the overall performance experience. I also contributed to rehearsal and performance planning, assisting with stage management and technical setup when needed, which provided insight into the broader logistics of theatre production and reinforced my organisational and problem-solving abilities.

As part of the ensemble, I attended specialised workshops on improvisation, physical theatre, and audition techniques. I also participated in industry visits and theatre club excursions, gaining exposure to professional performances and production practices. Furthermore, visiting industry professionals led masterclasses that enhanced my performance, collaboration, and creative problem-solving skills, offering a bridge between the ensemble environment and real-world theatre practice.

Shakespeare Carnival 2023

Duologue

As part of the After School Drama Ensemble, I performed a duologue from A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Sport for Jove Shakespeare Carnival in 2023. This comedic performance showcased my skills in classical text interpretation, comedic timing, and ensemble collaboration, and was the result of our ensemble’s creative rehearsal process. Our performance was awarded second place in the regional Diocese competition, reflecting both our preparation and ability to connect with audiences through Shakespearean comedy. This experience strengthened my confidence performing in front of larger audiences and highlighted the ensemble’s ability to bring classic theatre to life in a modern school setting.
